Unit 29 - Music Video Production - Assignment 2

Originate Ideas (Individual)

Music Track Analysis

The chosen track for this music video is "For Free" by Drake & DJ Khaled. This music video is going to involve two people both males in order to create this music video, in order to act the parts of both of the artists parts of the song. The track is within the Hip-hop/ rap genre meaning that the music video will need to involve the concepts and feature involved within the hip-hop/ rap genre with other music videos. By doing this will make sure the genre is conveyed well to the audience in order to maximise how the audience are intrigued within the track and the music video. The song is about a man, who feel that he is good enough for women, portraying a confidents and self motivated attitude within the song and throughout, within the song and the video the attitude from the artists need to be able to convey that emotion in the right way in order to get the message across to the audience.

Performers Style and Image

It is key and very important that both of my performers have the right style and image in order to be featured within this music video, as the part needs to be played and showed in the right way in order to give the message across. Within this track and song, the artists need to both have attitude within them in order for both of them to look self-obsessed, due to the lyrics motivating and speaking about themselves. The style of the image within this needs to be by the use of actions and body expressions in order to show the attitude off, as clothing and accessories will not make this style happen.

The style and genre of the musical track is Hip-hop/ rap, which means this needs to be presented within the music video, in order for this to fit the genre within the visualisation of the music video when this is presented. This maximises the interaction with the audience as they will be able to see the genre by looking and watching the video itself. The boys will need to be dressed within the Hip-hop/ rap genre in order to play the part well, this will involve looking at previous hip-hop/rap genre music videos and artists in order to gain the right inspiration for the clothing and the styles. Although Drake is a part of this song, he is a perfect example of a hip-hop/rap artist, and he's own style is something which fits into this category to present this genre very well, by looking at the clothing helps me to gain inspiration to make the artist fit within the genre well.

By analysing this picture of Drake, the clothing he is wearing is within the casual style which is something the genre carries off, in the sense that it is casual within their music, as they are speaking about casual situations. Within "For Free" they artists are speaking about casual topic about relationship,  which is within the style of the genre. Within my music video, the style of the artist and the image should reflect the dressed down genre and style in order to fit within the category well. As well as the style and genre of this song being hip-hop, the video and style of the outfits need to also include the rap artist style, by doing that I have looked at rap artist Kanye West, which shows off this style and theme as well as the rap image.
DJ Khaled
Kanye West

By looking at this image of rap artist Kanye West you can see that he is also wearing a casual clothing item with wearing jeans which are seen as a relaxed piece of clothing, however different from hip-hop, this is more towards the bling side of the clothing, however this is sonethign which also can be conveyed by the use of jewellery and accessories instead of the clothing. By looking at the artist DJ Khaled, he perfectly shows the style of a rap artist by the use of accessories instead of clothing. This is something which will be added into my music video, this will be created by the style of casual clothing with accessories which show off the rap genre well as a sense of wealth which is something conveyed within this type of music video.

The Video Style and Creative Concept

The video needs to styled, shot and made in the right way in order to convey the right meaning within the right genre, the song is about a man speaking well about himself in order to build his confidence up to the max. This means that within the genre of this music video the video must have the conventions of both the hop-hop and rap style, theme and genre. Within the hip-hop themed videos, there are many low shots with artists taking down to the camera, in order to speak to it in order to deliver the importance of the message, this is something which needs to be shot within "For Free" as the artist will have a powerful ego which could be put into the video and shot in this way. This will be created through the usage of the low angled and close up shot, this will easily show and represent the hip-hop theme well. The boys should make sure that they move to the beat, as dancing and moving is something which is frequently shown within hip-hop music videos in order to coney the hip-hop theme. The hip-hop genre involves within the usage of sport clothing e.g., hats and sweatbands, this is something which shows the genre. However the shots need to engage with focusing of the wealth of the artists, meaning that video should include within the theme of wealth too. The hip-hop genre is mainly around the male orientation, seeing as this is why it is best to use two boys in order to create this music video, the hip-hop video needs to include the link between the lyrics and the videos, this is something which I will make sure to convey as this is something which will increase the power of how the message comes across.

Research

In order to find inspiration for a new music video, it is essential that research is carried out in order to gain ideas and plan a new music video. For my research I found the music video 'Energy' by Drake. Within this video it was shot within a white room set, which showed a good contrast between the singers and the wall due to them standing out. After watching this, I came up with the idea to compose and create a music video with a featured white wall. As this video was of the genre of rap, the shots and composition of the music video fit within my own theme, for the song 'For Free'. This music video is by the artist Drake who conveys the theme of rap very well, meaning that looking and analysing this video is very beneficial due to ideas and inspiration gained. From this video I have decided that a white wall feature is something which is very effective due to the contrast of the detail to the wall.

As I want to convey the rap theme and genre to be conveyed clearly within my music video of 'For Free', the style and the visuals need to be met in order to produce this, this can be maximised by not only the location of the video but also the clothing and outfits that the actors within my music video wear. In order to gain ideas and inspiration I needed to make sure that research was conducted and found about previous artists work who work and perform within this genre. By looking at research about rap and hip/hop artist, the outfits found show this genre really well which is something I am going to show within my music video, when performing 'For Free'. By looking at the artist I found (Kanye West and Jay-Z), sun glasses are something which are worn by both artists which means this is something I will include for my actors to wear when shooting my own music video. Hats are something which are going to be featured within my music video,as by looking at music videos in the past from artist and researched, this was something which the artists wore, this shows the genre really well.

Permissions to Film

In order to film legally and sufficiently, it is essential to make sure you gain the right permissions to film in order to make sure every has their right authority to make sure they are applicable and give their full consent to film. Within the permission to film it gives permission to film within the given chosen location due to the permission given by the home owner, yet also the personal rights to film which gives the consent that the actors know that the video includes their body, face and voice where this could be streamed and shown to others. Below are the copies of the permissions to film form, now this is complete we have the correct rights to film, within the right locations. As the location does not belong to us ourselves, permission is required as an essential piece of the permission to film.

Location Permission Form - Brandon Foran

Personal Rights to Film - Brandon Foran

Personal Rights to Film - Martin Wassmer
Location Permission - Androa Laurence

Clearances

Clearances are permission processes which allow the streaming and the usage of pieces of music, when creating a music video it is essential to make sure you have the right permission to use a song in order to air. As my music video, is for a student course work benefit, this music video will not be uploaded publicly meaning that this video will not be able to be seen by the public eye, meaning that permission and clearances for this instance are not permitted due to the circumstances. However music videos which are streamed need the correct permission for their music videos to be uploaded and created legally.

Within a real professional music video, copy right would need to be agreed and cleared by the copy right from the record label or owner of the song, this needs to be cleared in order to have the ability and legal rights to use that piece of music within the music video. Without this permission and clearance the music video would be created illegally with potential consequences which may follow to the misuse of the music. After the music is cleared, the music video needs to agree that it has received the correct copy right information and permission to stream to the public. For example if the music video was put onto YouTube, they would need to make sure and find out that the right copyright has been confirmed in order to upload for the public to watch.
