Unit 57 - Photography - Assignment 3 - Evaluation

Evaluation

My shoot theme was based on documentary photographer, ‘Henri Cartier Bresson’, after researching into documentary photography his work stood out the most from many others, I was very intrigued with his theme of people doing everyday things, yet brining peoples emotions out within his photographs, I found the use of black and white very interesting in the sense that this effect made the picture complete. My shoots theme was to focus on people and peoples actions in the everyday life, within this my aim was to attract the different emotions in the image this was one by many camera settings such as Shutter Speed, ISO, Aperture and Focal Length. After taking my images I edited them to make sure I followed my theme of the emotions, to cary this out I changed all of my chosen images into black and white. After doing this I found that the black and white affect really helped my images create an emotion and a style. My theme of sadness and loneliness really came through at the end of my shoot.

During my shoot I was taking images of people, this became a problem and a challenge as I had to ask permission to many people to encounter and follow through with my shoot, many people agreed to taking part within my shoot however some people had declined. There were many scenes and shoot i intended to capture however the people I wished to shoot didn't want to have their pictures taken. This is something which documentary photographers face when they are taking their own images, this was very good for me to experience as I have really developed with my documentary photography skills as I have expertness the photographic rejections first hand. Apart from this problem my shoot went very well.

After my planning for my shoot, I feel that my shoot very well due to my preparation going to plan. The best thing about my shoot was the perfect images I took and how they showed my theme and style very well. Due to my exhibition I felt that my shoot turned out better than expected as everyone saw and knew my theme and style of photography in which I was going for.  The effects in which I put onto my image was the style of black  and white in order to Henri Cartier Bresson’s theme within the documentary photography field of photography. Not only did I want to show my images in black and white but i also wanted to show my editing skills within my work. To the eye my images looked very nice as the editing finished it off. My work over all was very effectiveness as i was consistent throughout my shoot and project indoor to support my original ideas and my thoughts for the whole shoot and the outcome of it. After my exhibition feedback, a couple of the individuals said they would have wanted to see some of my images in colour, I do agree to this to some extent as colour could have made the images more interesting and bright, however by including colour within the shoot I would have not exceeded my theme of, dull, sadness and loneliness with colours. This was the reason behind my choice of editing, also my theme and style was based on Henri- Cartier Bresson, in which he never presents colour within his work.

Within this image I created the style and meaning of selfishness which comes across within this image, in view of the two cars parked so close represents how some people do not care about peoples belongings and their own persons space and views. I took the decision to take this image  instantly when I saw this happening, this was really life documentary photography as I was sitting watching the world go by, until I saw this event happen, in which i needed to capture. Without the black and white i do not feel this image would have been as effective, if this was in colour the images wouldn’t signify the meaning and the dullness within the image. Within this image, the Aperture, ISO and Shutter Speed were all set right in order to create and capture this image well. The exposer is correct as the light is balanced within this image meaning it is not over exposed. Within my theme over exposer would have spoilt the image. In all of my other images i feel that all of my setting were chosen correctly by myself as i took that good decision when setting the capture to the correct mode and setting.

However within my images I could have created a colour selection theme on only a few of my images in order to create more colour and meaning within the image, the colour selection could have opened peoples eyes and helped them focus on the one object which would have been in colour, in order for that to be the centre focus in the whole image. this would have made the images and the meaning more in-depth and more interesting. However I am very happy with my project outcome and I have taken my exhibition feedback on board, within the future i will make sure my shoots are done well and I carry on looking at my feedback which is given to me.
