Unit 57 - Photography - Assignment 2

Tutor Feedback

This is the email in which I sent to my tutor/ teacher, this shows my three ideas and my options for what I want my shoot to consist of. My teacher said my ideas were fine and that I could carry on and work on my shoot.

Permission when Photographing in Public Places

As my theme is taking images of natural individuals doing natural everyday thing, I need to make sure the place I am taking my shoot, is the right place for my theme and type of photography. When researching into photography, there are five main ethical laws which relate with the photography world. All of these factors count and are in the same place as permissions would be  meaning that there are many things to ask and think about when doing this kind of task and shoot.

1. Autonomy - This is how you will deal with a persons consent or decline for the individual to appear within your images, this relate to my kind of shoot as I need to capture images of people in the street or wherever doing their normal every day activities order to do this I need to focus on certain people. I will politely approach each person which I intend to capture certain people. this way I will ask them if they would mind appearing in my images, which show natural life everyday. If the accept my request I would capture them doing their normal actions as this should is about naturalism. If they decline my request, I will thank them for their time and carry on asking people for their own consent. I do not expect everyone to say yes, this is good as I will have more time to have more options to make.

2. Non- Maleficence - This is to ensure that no harm is put onto the person being captured, this is done by the theme and the manner of the photo. This could mean if the person being captured is being labelled or thought of something different from the original intentional meaning which was meant to come across. When taking my own image I will make sure that the meaning portrayed across is the right message in which I am trying to show. I will keep reflecting on my theme plan in order to stick with my intentional meaning and theme of my shoot.

3. Beneficence - What is the meaning for this shoot and what am I trying to get across to the audience when they first view my photographs. During this do I harm or hurt anyone in the process of my intentions for my shoot? I need to make sure that I do not harm anyone within my images this can be both the person being captured or the thoughts and meaning which are reflected onto the audience who in which are viewing my images. To prevent this I will make sure my images are simple and only get across my intentional original meaning and no other meanings within the images shown and presented.

4. Fidelity - Am I using and capturing the right images for my theme and meaning? I will make sure the location, settings and type of image helps to show the meanings behind my images. Every factor I take into place will help with the outcome of the final pieces from this shoot, meaning that all the stages and factors go towards the build up for one theme in the end. There will be many steps to think about when I am planning and carrying out my shoot, this will include my location and all of my equipment which will be added into the final piece of the photography project. All of this will help and count for the final outcome.

5. Justice - Am I capturing people and communities with the same respect, meaning everyone who is being captured should be treated with the same respect as everyone else, this is good in order to keep the individuals happy when they are being placed within my images. This will keep the peace with everyone within this process.

Health & Safety Risk Assessment

When taking a shoot you need to make sure that everything is safe in order for the task to be completed in a safe way, to ensure every one is safe within this process. You are responsible for not only yourself but the people who are appearing in your shoot, this will insure that if anything happens, like accidents that they can be treated and carried out well and sufficiently.

Area or Activity
Hazard
People at Risk
Controlled Measures which are in Place
Risk Rating (low – high).
Controlled Measures Required
High Street (Loughton)
Slips, trip and falls:
1.       If there is rainfall there may me puddles resulting into wet flooring, meaning individuals may slip and fall over, which could result in injury.
2.       There may be unlevelled flooring meaning this could trip people up causing injury.
3.       There is a road, meaning people may cross the road and misjudge the speed of cars which are passing which could cause serious injury to people.
4.       The camera equipment could trip people up due to loose wires and equipment. If the wires get wet due to rain these cause electric issues, for example power problems which could result in injury too.
-          Photographers
-          Public, who are passing through the set.
-          People who are being photographed.
The photography set will be guarded off meaning people will avoid the area meaning this avoid any accident’s from occurring. If the flooring is wet, there will be ‘Floors Wet’ caution signs in order to prevent injury. If there a re any injuries, the closest A&E hospital would be ‘Whipps Cross Hospital’.
Medium
Before each of the shoots taken place, there will be an inspection on the premises to make sure the area is safe. The inspection will minimise hazards. The inspections will happen an hour before the shoot and during the shoot, this can be to keep an eye on the weather and the events happening around the site of the location.
Regents Road (Essex).
1.       Cars will be passing by especially in peak times. As the shoot is taken place by the road we need to be aware of the road and cars speeds.
2.       The road is very bumpy with some loose stones, meaning people need to be careful when walking with equipment.
3.       The weather can cause interruption due to rain on the electrical equipment; the weather can interrupt the look of the images and the shoot.
4.       The weather can cause injury, for example if it is raining and the floor is wet, this could cause people to slip over which can lead to injury.
-          The individuals being photographed.
-          The person taking the images.
-          The public and people around.
The equipment for the shoot will be tested before the shoot to make sure it is working. As this is being shot in the street close to a road, there will be someone on the look out to see if there are many cars and if so the shot will be put on hold until the rush hour and peak times have calmed down. There is no smoking on the set due to many electrical systems and equipment, this will stop any fire hazards, there will be a fire extinguisher on set and a first aid box for  onsite little accident’s.
Medium
There will be inspections carried out before the shoot up to an hour before to make sure the location is right for the shout.

Unit 57 - Photography - Assignment 2 - Photo's - Resubmission

Theme/ Emotion and Message Communicated

Within this shoot I have been inspired by artist 'Henri Cartier Bresson', when looking at his work, I picked up on his use of the theme of people, this is something I wanted to do. In order to carry on Henri's theme my aim was to change all of my images and edit them into black and white this not only makes the image more interesting to look at but it creates and gives more of a message off to the viewers, this also helps the message come through to the audience. My theme was to focus my shoot around people and the different activities in which people do, the aim for this was to show people the different emotions which different people go through every single day, whether they are doing a simple job or something more exciting. I have created the emotions through the setting within the camera. I have used a DSLR camera throughout the shoot in order to adjust the setting such as, Aperture, ISO and Shutter Speed, in order to create an effect in the image, which will increase the emotion levels in the image. For example if the aperture were to be lower the image would become and feel darker, resulting in a more negative emotion causing a more dull situation. My images are not necessarily all about focusing on emotion in a face but the emotion caused by the colour, texture and theme of the actual image in itself. Within these images and shoots i have used a DSLR camera for my main equipment, I have not used a tripod as I wanted to capture things on the spot as I wanted my theme to look free and natural, meaning a free hand held camera was the best idea for this particular shot. The focal point on the camera was not changed as I didn't need to zoom in a lot within this type of shoot. However the camera setting such as Aperture, ISO and Shutter Speed was changed frequently in order to help create a good effect in each image, to engage good emotion. My emotion I wanted to get across was loneliness, dull, sad, danger, mystery and also dark times.

Contact Sheet - Original Shoot (Not Edited) Including Settings Used on DSLR Camera

Risks Taken in the Development

As I wanted my images to have the more natural effect I needed to taken them during a normal day, meaning I had no further control of things such as the weather and the people around me in pubic places. if people were not happy with their images being taken I would of had to change my plan in able to cooperate this. The cameras position was difficult to control, I personally chose not to use a tripod for this shoot as this wasn't staged and no meant to be a clean photography shoot, the main idea was the make it real and natural, this was done and created by the free hand held camera positions. The risks were that the camera could have moved slightly if a picture were to become into immediate focus and if the camera had fallen. By changing the setting could have left the images from looking completely different or even too bad to use, however I took the risk of taking the images manually so I had more control over the camera meaning I created the images I wanted to take correctly. In order to capture real life events, I wasn't able to plan anything to capture as I didn't know what would have been at my location on that day.

Creativity

The creativity in which I have encountered is shown as evidence within the images themselves, as this is something you can see visually. The settings I had picked were set for a reason in order to create the effects which were captured. The brightness and texture of the images were controlled in such a way to make sure the messages and themes were brought across in the right way. The images and theme was mystery, dullness and loneliness, this is something which was conveyed well due to my feedback from the people who viewed my images in the exhibition, this was all due to the creative choices in which were made in this task. The creativity was created via my themes and the situations in which I wanted to capture.

Edited Images - Best Images for Exhibition...

This image shoes someones shoe which I captured whilst sitting on a bench, this symobolises a normal shoe stepped on a lot and left many foot prints behind where ever that person with the shoes has gone. The shoe is in full focus meaning it is main theme and story within the image. If this shoe could speak, the shoe could tell us many things in which it have seem, yet this is something no one thinks about when they put on their own shoes, however the shoes for once is the most important point in this image. The black and white brings out the detail in the floor and the shoes showing the detail well. The black and white effect causes more emotion attracted in the image.

This image is focused on three different people walking and sitting on the same street, this shows three different people thinking about different things, their emotions are all different for one another yet they are captured in one shot. The bin man have the most focused in this image as he is doing the most important job in order to clean the area in which these people are walking on, he may be ignored by passers by, yet within this image I have made him in full focus as I feel he should get the most praise and attention for doing such a wonderful job. The black and white creates a lovely effect within this image. The woman on the phone may be having the most important conversation, yet she is the one who is being ignored in this image yet the bin man is given the most respect.

This image I have related to 'Henri Cartier Bressons', of the young girl in front of a wall. When I was researching Henri's work this image attracted my attention, the detail within the image is something I wanted to create myself. The Aperture played a big part within this as I wanted to lighting to be dark to create more of an emotion within the image, this create a dull mood which is something I want to engage. The boy is looking up at something, meaning cameras do not affect what people do, this is a very natural image as the boy is still looking around as if the camera isn't there.

The inspirational image for this shot.

This image is very interesting as I have taken it from high above creating a really natural mood and setting for this shot, due to the shutter speed, the legs and the movement on the legs is blurred causing a good illusion of a moving skateboard this really elaborates the movement within this. the image is made to look natural due to the normal act carried out by the boy, not realised he is being captured. The Aperture is create the dark tone to the image, which is a very good touch to add within this.

This image represents peoples selfishness within this world and how people do not care about others. This picture is very real and is something I felt that I needed to capture as this was so interesting. The black and white edit shows the simple touch of this image and how the car is parked very bluntly and doesn't car about the other person. The gab between the cars is so small meaning there is such small thought from the person who parked so close to these cars.

Responses

This is a link to my questionnaire put in place for my feedback on my exhibition that I put on and showed people to view, this was so they could look at my images and comment on them.

Unit 57 - Photography - Assignment 2 - Photographer Research

Documentary Photography & Artists

There are many types of photography, documentary photography is one of them. Documentary photography is a very popular form of photography, it records events and moments which happen in a space of time, this can be anything modern or historical which happens at a certain time. this type of photography can be personal to someone and can be away of documenting a space of time in which they never want to forget. Documentary photography is very good to show different parts of society, people are able to see different events and moments through a different perspective meaning they can communicate with the events within each image. It can communicate the unseen sites in certain parts of the world which have never been seen before, this is raw information within an image captured. People may ask how a photographer is able to take images of strangers in different areas, they do as they gain a strong trust with those who they are taking images of. Examples for this type of photography can include  images taken from war, conflict and areas hit by natural disasters e.g. the destruction documented by an earthquake. Photographers such as Steve McCurry, Henri Cartier Bresson and Dorothea Lange, focus on documentary photography. This type of photography could be found in books which are explaining real life situations, for example history books, also in factual books and magazines. This type of photography captures the contemporary moments in which happening around the world.

Dorothea Lange

Dorothea Lange was born in 1895 and died in 1965, she was an American documentary photographer who captured many images which explained event through the imagery. She was most famous for her work in the 'Depression era'. Dorothea's style of photography is very emotional and shows the sad and upsetting emotions within her images. All of her images are put into black and white, this shows the history through the images as the pictures years ago were in black and white originally, the effect from the colour of the image shows an important part in history. The focus within the images shows every detail within the emotion of the people who are being photographed in the image. Within her images the style she is aiming to get across is the real life effects on people, with the every day activities in which they do. Within the images, she is always focused on someone, whether they are looking away from the camera or giving constant eye contact. The eye contact style of the images, shows the story behind the image and shows the in depth of the emotions within the body language of the individuals captured. She is always capturing the image at the same level and height to the individuals, this is done to show how equal everyone is within this stage in history.

Examples of Dorothea Lange's Photographs.

Henri Cartier-Bresson

Henri Cartier-Bresson, was born in 1908 and died in 2004, he was a French documentary photographer, he was most famous for with his humanist photography. Henri's style of photography is capturing humans doing real life everyday activities, the style of imagery is pictures taken of individuals whilst they are in the middle of doing their activities. He captures very nice shots, he makes out that no one I aware of his presents when he is taking the image. He has put his images into black and white to create a better effect when getting the emotions across to the audience. As his main theme, style and focus is of people this means the images show peoples emotions within each photograph and piece of work. His work really interests me as the images are so natural yet so meaningful. The styles within the images help to describe what is happening within the images. For example is the image was displayed in bright vibrant colours the emotions and meaning within the images would be completely different compared of what they are saying now. I really like the images in which Henri takes and I like the things which ar in full focus.

Examples of Henri Cartier- Bresson.

Steve McCurry

Steve McCurry, is a photographer which uses the style of documentary within his images. He uses the style of bright colour within each image in which he creates. He mainly focuses and captures images of peoples faces, as like a portraiture type image. By him capturing faces he is showing everyones emotions within that one shot. Each person who is captured is living a very different life, with different stories and emotions, every person he captures is different due to both their appearance and their lifestyle. When he focuses on people he uses the use of eye contact in order for the audience to see the person and their life through their eyes. He has a very cultural eye when he is taking his shots, by using different people of nationalities shows life all over the world, as a documentary he is showing the different events and life around the world. Every image is very sharp when it is captured, Steve has main sure you can see every particle on the skin and very reflection off of the eyes, this is good as you see the attention to detail very clearly and well meaning it is easy to reflect on the emotions and meanings from the images.

Examples of Steve McCurry's Photographs.

Mood board and Brain Storm for my Idea

When looking at my three artist and researching into their themes and styles I found my favourite documentary arts, who was Henri Cartier Bresson. I have looked at many of his images and the style of his work is of black and white, he focuses on life on the streets but also captures each individual emotion of everyone who is captured within his image. All of the images are changed into black and white in order to create more of an emotion within each individual in the image. The images are so simple yet so powerful due to the emotions and moods within the image. I could photography people doing normal things like how Bresson did, this can be done by capturing people completing their actions. I want to capture really natural people can scenes. Within my images  I will change the camera setting in order to capture the bets image as possible.

This Idea

Pros

- This is a very good theme as this follows Henri's work idea.
- The black and white theme is something I'm very interested in, and I want to experiment with it.
- This theme is very interesting to shoot and to look at.
- I feel that there is a lot to work with when using this style, for example the camera settings on a camera. E.g. Aperture to control the lighting.
- Capturing real life is something very in depth and interesting.
- This theme brings out a lot of emotion and meanings which lead to stories, to go with each image, this is done by the effect and visual appearance of the image.

Cons

- Capturing people may be risky due to people not wanting you to photograph them.
- When shooting in public places this may cause offence to people.
- Being near roads and other people may be a danger hazard.
- The meaning may be too vague for some people and may be simple for others.
